Making a Wiser Choice

Well, a decision I wish I handled differently was how I handled when my friend Brittany began to get sicker and sicker. She always had a weak heart because she was born with a hole in it, but I never really let it get to me before. We've been best friends for years and years. The thing was that her mind never really matured. It was like she was permanently stuck at 12, or regressing. So, you could say I outgrew her. She had been confined to her home because she was too weak to go to school. I stopped talking to her as often, and eventually stopped visiting even though she lived next door. It seemed every time I went to visit her, she would come up with some unrealistic fantasy. And then, she died last year after I had stopped visiting her for a few months. I hadn't even known that she had spent those months in the hospital because of our lack of communication. I've never felt so awful about myself in my entire life.

I know that if I could do it again, I would change everything. Be there everyday, hold her hand through it all. I would learn to not be so selfish and give her a hand and a visit because she couldn't go to school anymore and get together with her boyfriend and friends. I know now that I must learn from this terrible mistake I've made and never allow it to happen again.

  1. Oh, I do know what you're experiencing. I recently went through something quite similar.
